Definition

A status page is a public or private web page that shows the current operational status of your services. It typically displays each service as "operational", "degraded performance", "partial outage", or "major outage", along with a timeline of recent incidents and scheduled maintenance. Status pages build trust by communicating transparently during outages.

Why it matters

When your service goes down, the first thing users do is check your status page. If you do not have one, they flood your support channels with "is it down?" messages. A status page answers that question before they ask, reducing support load during incidents and demonstrating that you take reliability seriously. For B2B SaaS companies, a status page is table stakes.

Example

During a database outage, a SaaS company updated their status page to "major outage" and posted an incident update: "We are investigating a database issue. Some users may be unable to log in." Their support inbox received 80% fewer messages than during the previous outage (when they had no status page). Customers checked the status page instead of emailing support.
