What Is Uptime?
Definition
Uptime is the amount of time a website, server, or service is operational and accessible to users. It is usually expressed as a percentage: 99.9% uptime means the service was down for about 8.8 hours over the course of a year. The goal for most production services is 99.9% ("three nines") or higher.
Why it matters
Every minute your service is down is a minute your users cannot reach you. For e-commerce sites, downtime directly costs revenue. For SaaS companies, downtime erodes customer trust. Monitoring your uptime lets you measure reliability, identify patterns, and improve your infrastructure before users notice.
Example
A SaaS platform monitored its uptime for the month and found 99.7% availability. That sounds high, but it represents over 2 hours of downtime. By analyzing incident data, the team identified a nightly database backup that was causing 30-second outages and moved it to a replica. Uptime improved to 99.95%.
