Definition

Mean Time to Detect (MTTD) is the average time between when an incident starts and when your team becomes aware of it. If a server crashes at 2:00 AM and your monitoring alert fires at 2:01 AM, your MTTD is 1 minute. If no monitoring is in place and a customer reports the issue at 9:00 AM, your MTTD is 7 hours.

Why it matters

You cannot fix what you do not know is broken. Every minute of undetected downtime is a minute your users are impacted while you are unaware. Reducing MTTD is usually the fastest, cheapest way to improve overall reliability: it is easier to detect faster than to fix faster. The best incident is one you detect and resolve before users notice.

Example

Before PingWatchdog, a team's average MTTD was 45 minutes: users noticed the issue and reported it to support. After setting up 30-second checks with PingWatchdog, their MTTD dropped to 30 seconds. Total downtime per incident stayed roughly the same (about 20 minutes to fix), but users experienced 20 minutes of impact instead of 65 minutes.

How PingWatchdog helps

PingWatchdog checks your endpoints as frequently as every 30 seconds and sends instant alerts. The combination of fast checks and immediate notifications minimizes your MTTD. Incident auto-creation captures the exact moment the issue started, giving you accurate MTTD data for post-mortems and reliability reporting.
